Hang Up - Save a Life

Yesterday CNN and Time ran a story on Taylor Lemings' facebook group, "I text message people while driving and haven't crashed yet". Needless to say, the groups enrollment grew instantly, (including yours truly). It was a blessing though that I did join because I was contacted by an administrator of another more important group titled, "We Don't Text Message and Drive." I was so taken with their mission that I have added their website link to this blog for all to see. PLEASE VISIT THEM

So sad…

I’m starting to feel old because I can remember a time when the only distraction people had while driving was the radio, food or talking to passengers. Today, people have cell phones, text messaging, in-dash DVD players, GPS systems and a host of other technology competing for their attention.

What happened to just driving in silence and being alone with your thoughts?

I see the same thing at the college where I work. When classes are in session I can go outside and see a sea of students all walking to their next classes while talking on their cell phones. It seems like everyone these days walks around in public constantly talking into their phones or Bluetooth headsets.

As an aside: Let's declare a moratorium on Bluetooth headset use in public indoor spaces. There’s nothing more pathetic than seeing some guy walk into a restaurant talking into thin air while wearing a stupid glowing thing on his ear. Dude, the phone is like 18” away from your head. Try using your arm to lift it to your ear. Using a headset while driving (if it’s necessary to be on the phone) is smart. Walking around indoors with a glowing piece of plastic on your ear just makes you look like a dick.

It’s tragic that so many people feel the need for constant stimulation by electronic devices.

Here’s a thought: read a book! Yeah, a physical book, with real paper. You know, one that you don’t have to plug in. Or go outside and meet someone new. In person. Not online. Not in a chat room. Not on MySpace. Like, for real.

While it's true that I’ve always been interested in high tech stuff, in recent years I can really see the depersonalizing, soul-sapping effect that it can have when abused.
